Building a gingerbread house is part of many families' holiday traditions. Kids and adults love to eat the candy and sneak a spare cookie while spending time in the kitchen together. If you're not a baker, there are plenty of gingerbread house kits that will give you all the decorating fun with none of the baking fuss.
We consulted with two gingerbread experts to inform our recommendations: John Cook, Executive Pastry Chef at The Omni Grove Park Inn and a judge of the National Gingerbread House Competition, and Melissa Redell, owner of The Solvang Bakery in Solvang, California. They take gingerbread very seriously, and so do we.

This A-frame house comes sturdily assembled, ready for decorating with the included multicolored gumdrops, candy canes, and candy balls. Sort the candy into the provided cups, snip off the icing bag tip, and get going on your masterpiece.
A kit for candy lovers
Tootsie Roll Gingerbread Cottage Kit, available at Target and Oriental Trading, from $10.99
The gingerbread comes second to the array of Tootsie candies in this kit. Try to resist the Dots and Fruit Chews while you're linking the gingerbread panels together and securing them with white icing. A small stage for big ideas, this kit is a great middle-ground between beginner and more advanced gingerbread builders. After you assemble the A-frame house with the included royal icing, you can decorate with green fondant and three different candies, including rainbow candy canes. An Oreo cookie house

Glue together the pre-baked chocolate cookie pieces with white royal icing, and then decorate with regular and mini-size Oreos. The kit also includes rainbow gummies and candy jewels, but for the all-Oreo look, there are holiday-themed and even gingerbread-flavored Oreos to purchase separately.

If you need a break from baked goods engineering, you can decorate gingerbread cookies as a stand-alone activity or an addition to your winter scene. Target offers an affordable, all-inclusive kit with four cookies, two types of icing, and multicolored sprinkles. For a more substantial activity, the cookie kit from Williams Sonoma has six cookies and a wider array of decorations, including gumdrops, multicolored sprinkles, and decorating sugars in four colors.
